Lakers triumph at Calvin Winter Invite breaking multiple records

The Calvin Winter Invite concluded on December 7, 2024, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with both the men's and women's teams achieving first place. Over the weekend, several school and pool records were broken.

In the men's events, Jon Kantzenbach secured first place in the 1650 free with a time of 15:26.85, marking the fastest mile time this season at Venema Aquatic Center. Will Herwig finished second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:46.27, while three other Lakers took third through fifth places.

Matt Bosch won the men's 100-yard freestyle and set a new pool record with a time of 43.01. Evan Scotto DiVetta followed closely in second place. Andrew Goh claimed first in the 200-yard breaststroke at 1:57.39, supported by Esteban Nuñez Del Prado who placed third.

Ammar Yatarnisy achieved second place in the 200-yard fly with a time of 1:50.13. The team of Matt Bosch, Carsyn Christoffel, Esteban Nuñez Del Prado, and Evan Scotto DiVetta broke another pool record in the 400 free relay with a winning time of 2:54.77.

In diving events, Matthew Bloomel took second place in the one-meter dive scoring 461.75 points while Corey Shade secured third with a score of 446.90.

For the women’s team, Vittoria Proietti broke a school record in the 200 backstroke with her first-place finish at 1:58.73. Lucy Hedley came second in the 100-yard freestyle clocking in at 50.14 seconds.

Sara Alvarez topped the podium in the women's 200-yard breaststroke with a record-breaking time of 2:14.82; Live Geiger was right behind her for second place.

Alysa Wager won first place in the women's 200 fly with Kelly Shortall taking second and Gaia Tomaselli finishing third.

In relay competitions, Angelica Angilletta, Kiersten Harmon, Katie O'Connell, and Annabelle Williams achieved fourth place in their event.

Maddie Kooistra emerged victorious overall at the Calvin Winter Invitational's three-meter dive event scoring an impressive total of 478.95 points; Olivia Kutsche secured third place.

The Lakers are scheduled to compete next against Indian River State College during their winter trip to Fort Pierce on December 20th, promising more updates soon.
