The Grand Valley State University (GVSU) women's basketball team maintained their undefeated record with a decisive victory over Wayne State, finishing the game 80-59. This win marks their ninth consecutive victory of the season and concludes the opening weekend of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play.
In the initial stages of the game, both teams exchanged leads, with Wayne State initially taking a 10-8 advantage. However, Ellie Droste's three-pointer put GVSU back in front at 11-10. The Warriors briefly regained the lead at 15-13 before GVSU went on a significant 12-2 run to close the first quarter ahead by eight points, leading 25-17.
Wayne State narrowed the gap early in the second quarter with a 7-0 run, bringing them within one point. Despite this effort, GVSU managed another late surge to extend their lead to eight points by halftime, standing at 42-34.
The Lakers continued to dominate in the second half. After exchanging baskets initially, they embarked on a decisive 9-0 run initiated by another three-pointer from Droste. This expanded their lead to 55-40 and further increased it to an 18-point margin by the end of the third quarter.
Midway through the final quarter, GVSU's lead grew to as much as 20 points following two successful free throws from Lexi Plitzuweit. Although Wayne State attempted to close in, GVSU secured a comfortable victory with a final score difference of 21 points.
Rylie Bisballe contributed significantly with her ninth double-digit scoring game this season, recording 15 points. MacKenzie Bisballe added another solid performance with 12 points and nine rebounds. Nicole Kamin chipped in with ten points and five rebounds while Ellie Droste finished with nine points after hitting three triples.
Looking ahead, "The Lakers stay on the road next weekend," where they will conclude their nonconference schedule against Quincy, Drury, and Ohio State.
