The Grand Valley State University (GVSU) women's basketball team concluded their three-game road trip with a game against Ohio State, a Division I nationally-ranked team. The Buckeyes took an early lead and maintained it throughout the game, securing an 82-57 victory over the Lakers. This defeat marks GVSU's first loss of the season, leaving them with an 11-1 record as they prepare for one more nonconference game.
Ohio State started strong, scoring the first four points before Rylie Bisballe put GVSU on the scoreboard with a layup assisted by Abrie Cabana. The Buckeyes responded with a decisive 27-8 run to end the first quarter, leading 31-10.
In the second quarter, GVSU initiated a 7-4 run that included a three-pointer from Nicole Kamin. However, Ohio State answered back with a 9-1 run to close out the half, leading 44-18.
GVSU's offense improved in the third quarter. Kathryn Schmidt and Avery Zeinstra each scored three-pointers before the media timeout. Later in the quarter, Cabana scored five consecutive points and Molly Anderson added another three-pointer. Despite outscoring Ohio State 25-20 in this period, GVSU still trailed 64-43.
In the fourth quarter, Cabana continued her strong performance by scoring another three-pointer and hitting a jumper for a personal 5-0 scoring streak. Additional contributions came from Bisballe, Schmidt, Paige Vanstee, Lauren Slagle, and Sydney Cherney during this final period.
Cabana led GVSU with 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting and also provided three assists. Zeinstra contributed eight points with two successful three-pointers while Vanstee added seven points. Bisballe secured seven rebounds while Lexi Plitzuweit recorded six rebounds and three assists.
Looking ahead, GVSU will wrap up their year with an away game against Northwood in Midland on Sunday at 3:00 PM.
