William Dunn was the top scorer for GVSU, contributing 21 points and five rebounds. Mason Docks and Jalen Charity both added 17 points to the scoreboard. Both teams showed similar shooting accuracy, with GVSU hitting 47% from the field and Illinois Springfield achieving the same percentage. Illinois Springfield started strong with a quick lead of 9-4, making three successful three-point shots early on. However, GVSU quickly leveled the score at 11-11 thanks to Shamus Thompson's hook shot. Trevor Smith Jr.'s layup gave GVSU their largest first-half lead at seven points.
As the first half progressed, Illinois Springfield tied it up again at 28-28 before eventually taking a four-point lead. The Lakers responded with an offensive burst that allowed them to enter halftime ahead by three points.
In the second half, GVSU initially extended their lead but saw it evaporate as Illinois Springfield fought back to take control of the game. The Prairie Stars reached their largest advantage at ten points before GVSU mounted an impressive comeback run to reclaim a slight edge.
Regulation ended with both teams tied after a strong defensive effort from GVSU forced overtime. During extra time, Jalen Charity momentarily put GVSU ahead by three points before Illinois Springfield sealed their victory through crucial plays and free throws.
