The Grand Valley State men's basketball team narrowly lost to Michigan Tech with a final score of 59-58. This game marked the start of the 2025 calendar year for both teams. Following this match, the Lakers' record stands at 6-5 overall and 2-1 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), while the Huskies improved their standing to 8-3 overall and remain undefeated in the GLIAC at 3-0.

Grand Valley State shot 39% from the field and maintained a free throw percentage of 78%. Meanwhile, Michigan Tech recorded a shooting percentage of 38.9% from the field and achieved a three-point shooting rate of 36%. The Lakers managed to outscore their opponents in specific areas, leading with a paint score of 32-20 and fast break points totaling 10 compared to Michigan Tech's nine.

Trevor Smith Jr. emerged as GVSU's top scorer with 11 points on an efficient 4-6 shooting performance, alongside contributing two steals. Shamus Thompson added ten points, connecting on two out of three shots from the field and six out of nine free throws. He also collected five rebounds, four being offensive. Kaden Brown contributed another ten points along with two rebounds, making four out of five free throws. William Dunn provided eight points and led his team with eight rebounds.

On Michigan Tech's side, Ty Fernholz was instrumental in their victory by scoring 18 points through five successful three-pointers out of ten attempts. Dawson Nordgaard added ten points on a highly accurate shooting display, hitting five out of seven shots and recording three steals. Josh Terrian chipped in with nine points by making half of his six attempts from beyond the arc.
