The Grand Valley State men's wrestling team, ranked 12th, is set to participate in the Glenville State Quad on January 5, marking the team's first dual meet action of the year. The event will feature four ranked teams and is considered one of the top four-team events in the country for the 2024-25 season. The Lakers will compete against second-ranked Glenville State at 10 a.m., eighth-ranked Lander at 11:30 p.m., and 22nd-ranked Gannon at 1 p.m. Additionally, the quad will showcase 20 wrestlers who are ranked in the top 15 by the National Wrestling Coaches Association across ten weight classes.
Grand Valley State recently secured an eighth-place finish at the Midwest Classic with a score of 75.5 points. Glenville State achieved third place with 127 points, Lander was sixth with 84.5 points, and Gannon finished in eighteenth place with 58.5 points. In terms of dual meet records, Glenville State stands at six wins and one loss, Lander has seven wins and one loss, while Gannon holds two wins and one loss.
"We have a number of young kids that will be wrestling in a college dual meet for the first time in their college careers and I am excited to see how we will compete in that dual meet atmosphere," stated head coach Joey Simcoe. "You have to focus on your match within the framework of the dual and keep your emotions controlled," Simcoe added.
Nine out of ten weight classes include at least one ranked wrestler, with three specific weights (133 lbs, 174 lbs, and 285 lbs) featuring three ranked competitors each. Eight weight classes will have two or more ranked athletes participating.
The detailed rankings per weight class are as follows:
- At 125 lbs: Colton Drousias from Glenville State ranks thirteenth.
- At 133 lbs: Gavin Quiocho from Glenville State ranks first; Jak Keller from Grand Valley State ranks ninth; Jerry Echevarria from Gannon ranks eleventh.
- At 141 lbs: Isham Peace from Lander ranks ninth; Caleb Brooks from Glenville State ranks twelfth.
- At 149 lbs: Gabe Onorato from Glenville State ranks fifth; Kenny Kiser from Gannon ranks tenth.
- At 157 lbs: No wrestlers are currently ranked.
- At 165 lbs: David Hunsberger from Lander ranks first; Guy Deleonardis from Glenville State ranks eighth.
- At 174 lbs: Hayden Pummel from Glenville State ranks first; Josh Kenny from Grand Valley State ranks fourth; Patrick Jackson from Gannon ranks seventh.
- At 184 lbs: Kyle Homet from Glenville State ranks sixth; Brayden Mirjavadi from Grand Valley State ranks ninth.
- At 197 lbs: Nick Johnson from Glenville State ranks seventh; Wyatt Miller from Grand Valley State ranks fifteenth.
- At heavyweight (285 lbs): Carter Blough from Grand Valley State ranks fifth; Dorian Crosby from Gannon ranks eighth; Colby Whitehill from Glenville State ranks thirteenth.
