Grand Valley State University (GVSU) and Pittsburg State University have announced a one-year agreement to face off in a football game on September 13, 2025. The match is scheduled for a 4 p.m. kickoff at Carnie Smith Stadium, located on the campus of Pittsburg State.
"We are excited to play an outstanding football program in Pittsburg State at an incredible venue and game day atmosphere in Carnie Smith Stadium," said GVSU head coach Scott Wooster. He acknowledged the difficulty of scheduling games at the Division II level and credited GVSU's Director of Athletics, Keri Becker, for her efforts in arranging this matchup.
The two teams have previously met only once, with Grand Valley State emerging victorious with a narrow 24-21 win during the NCAA Playoff Second Round in Allendale in 2023. In their most recent seasons, GVSU concluded with an 11-2 record and ranked sixth nationally, while Pittsburg State finished with an 8-3 record and was ranked 14th.
Grand Valley State has consistently faced challenging non-conference opponents such as West Florida, Colorado State-Pueblo, Colorado School of Mines, Indianapolis, and Delta State. The Lakers hold the highest winning percentage among FBS, FCS, and Division II programs nationwide with a record of 454-153-3 (.747) over their 52-year history. They have made four consecutive NCAA DII Playoff appearances and boast four National Championships from six title game appearances.
Pittsburg State is recognized as the all-time winningest program in Division II history with 760 victories. The Gorillas have participated in the NCAA postseason on 20 occasions and secured NCAA-II National Championships in both 1991 and 2011.
