GVSU women's basketball secures dominant win over LSSU

Grand Valley State University's women's basketball team achieved a decisive victory against Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. The GVSU Lakers won with a score of 104-48, maintaining their unbeaten record in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) at 5-0 and improving their overall record to 16-1.

The game began with Abrie Cabana scoring the first points for GVSU, but LSSU briefly took the lead with a three-pointer. However, this was short-lived as GVSU responded with a 23-0 run. Hadley Miller contributed to this run with a three-pointer, while Cabana added two more, pushing the score to 25-3. Although LSSU managed another three-pointer, GVSU closed the first quarter leading 35-6 after another scoring burst.

In the second quarter, Sydney Cherney extended GVSU's lead beyond 30 points early on. The gap widened further following two free throws by Miller, making it 48-8. By halftime, GVSU held a commanding lead of 63-23.

The third quarter saw both teams exchanging baskets, but GVSU maintained control and entered the final period ahead by 76-32. In the fourth quarter, Cherney and Cabana each hit additional three-pointers to extend their lead to over 50 points at 86-36. A late surge from GVSU resulted in an 11-3 run to conclude the game.

Paige Vanstee achieved her first career double-double with season-highs of 14 points and ten rebounds, along with two steals. Avery Zeinstra scored twelve points; Rylie Bisballe and Abrie Cabana each added eleven points. Nicole Kamin and Ellie Droste also reached double figures with ten points each. Cherney scored nine points from three successful three-point shots. Hadley Miller contributed nine points and five rebounds while Molly Anderson provided five assists. MacKenzie Bisballe recorded four steals; Kamin, Zeinstra, and Kathryn Schmidt each had three steals.

Ellie Droste's performance moved her into tenth place on GVSU's all-time scoring list with a total of 1,324 career points.

Looking ahead, the Lakers will continue their road games next Thursday against Davenport in the Crosstown Showdown.
