The Grand Valley State University (GVSU) women's basketball team claimed a 70-51 victory over Roosevelt University (RU) in their first-ever meeting, held in Chicago. Despite a challenging start, GVSU managed to outscore RU by 23 points over the final three quarters. This win brings GVSU's overall record to 18-1 and an undefeated 8-0 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).
Roosevelt initially took an 11-5 lead within the first five minutes of play, marking their largest lead of the game. The teams exchanged baskets for the remainder of the quarter, with Roosevelt ending ahead at 18-14.
In the second quarter, GVSU initiated an 8-2 run, taking a narrow lead at 22-20 after Hadley Miller scored two three-pointers. Following a scoreless stretch from both sides, Paige Vanstee broke through with a layup. Although RU reduced their deficit to two points later on, GVSU finished strong with an 8-3 run, concluding the half at 30-25.
GVSU began the second half with four consecutive points, extending their advantage to nine at 34-25. While Roosevelt trimmed it down to five points at one stage, GVSU responded with a decisive 12-4 run featuring back-to-back threes from Abrie Cabana and closed the third quarter leading by thirteen points at 51-38.
An early fourth-quarter surge saw GVSU go on an 8-1 run, stretching their lead to twenty as Molly Anderson and Miller both connected from beyond the arc. Although Roosevelt briefly narrowed it down by scoring ten straight points, GVSU secured its seventh consecutive win by responding with two crucial baskets.
Nicole Kamin led her team with seventeen points while contributing six rebounds, six assists, and five steals. Abrie Cabana added ten points; Hadley Miller made three triples for nine points; MacKenzie Bisballe also scored nine and blocked five shots; Rylie Bisballe grabbed seven rebounds; Ellie Droste chipped in six points alongside four assists and rebounds each.
Looking ahead: "GVSU returns home for matchups against Parkside on Thursday and Purdue Northwest on Saturday," reads part of their schedule announcement. "Thursday will be '616 Night' and Saturday is 'Sawyer's Day.'"
