State Rep. Nancy DeBoer | Michigan House Republicans
State Representative Nancy DeBoer, a Republican from Holland, has been appointed as the chair of the House Education & Workforce Committee. Her new role involves overseeing legislation related to schools, students, teachers, and the broader education system in Michigan.
DeBoer's appointment was announced by Speaker Matt Hall. With a background in education, DeBoer began her career teaching English at middle and high school levels after graduating with a degree in secondary education from Calvin College. Her family is deeply rooted in education; her daughter teaches in Michigan public schools while her son works at a Catholic school in Virginia. Her husband, Jim DeBoer, taught for three decades in public schools and is now a professor at Hope College.
“It’s an honor to be entrusted with this important committee that plays an essential role in building the futures of Michigan’s children,” said DeBoer. “I am passionate about ensuring every child in our state has an equal opportunity for success and every parent is at the forefront of their kids’ education.”
In her first term during the 2023-24 legislative session, DeBoer served as the Republican vice chair of the School Aid and Michigan Department of Education Subcommittee and participated in the subcommittee on Higher Education and Community Colleges. She successfully introduced a bill on school safety that was signed into law after passing through two Democrat-controlled legislative chambers.
“There’s nothing more important than our children,” DeBoer stated. “The issues facing them should be among our highest priorities. Since beginning my governmental service career on the Holland City Council, and throughout my time as mayor, I have focused on treating each person with dignity and respect and working to build a better community together with people whether we agree on everything or not. I look forward to working alongside every member of this committee to make Michigan a better place to learn.”
The Education & Workforce Committee meetings are scheduled for Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. in room 327 of the House Office Building. Meetings will be accessible online for local residents who wish to follow proceedings.
In addition to her chairmanship, DeBoer will serve on committees concerning Health Policy; Rules; and Energy. Updates on her activities can be found on her official website.
