The Grand Valley State men's tennis team commenced their spring season with a decisive 7-0 victory over McKendree on Friday, January 31, in Plainfield, Illinois. This result puts the Lakers at a 1-0 start for the season while McKendree begins at 0-1.
In doubles play, Grand Valley State secured the doubles point by sweeping all matches. Victor Lopes and Lucas Gonzalez achieved a 6-4 win in the top doubles position. Ignasi Garros and Chimo Minguez followed with a 6-3 victory at No. 2 doubles, and Stephen Claassen along with Lawrence Ivanov added another win at No. 3 doubles with a score of 6-4.
The singles matches also saw success for the Lakers. Denys Zamaraiev earned a straight-set victory of 7-6, 6-1 at the top singles position. Victor Lopes won his match in straight sets as well, finishing with scores of 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2 singles. Lucas Gonzalez triumphed with a scoreline of 7-6, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Ignasi Garros continued the streak with a win of 7-6, 6-4 at No. 4 singles, while Patricio Sepulveda secured his match after two tiebreakers with scores of 7-6, 7-6 at No.5 singles. Stephen Claassen completed the sweep with an emphatic straight-set win of 6-0, 6-0 at No.6 singles.
Looking ahead to their home schedule next weekend, the Laker men will host Tiffin on Friday, February 7th at noon and Findlay on Saturday, February 8th at five in the evening. Both events are scheduled to take place at Premier Athletic and Tennis Club in Grandville, Michigan.
