The GVSU women's basketball team, led by head coach Mike Williams, has announced the finalization of its 2025 signing class. The new recruits include five freshmen: Anayya Davis, Avery Lay, Ava Mallar, Alice Max, and Madi Uyl. These players are noted for their impressive high school careers.
Coach Williams commented on the abilities of Madi Uyl and Ava Mallar, describing them as "combo guards that play with great intensity," capable of shooting from beyond the arc and making plays while attacking the rim. He also highlighted their defensive skills in disrupting opponents and rebounding effectively.
Discussing Avery Lay, Anayya Davis, and Alice Max, Williams praised their athleticism as wing players offering "great length & versatility." According to him, they are all solid three-point shooters who can score inside as well. Their defensive presence is expected to be significant due to their ability to guard shooters on the perimeter.
Anayya Davis hails from Sterling Heights, Michigan where she played for Henry Ford High School. She is a two-time Macomb County Player of the Year and an All-State player who recently surpassed 1,000 career points.
Avery Lay comes from Chelsea High School in Chelsea, Michigan. A three-time All-State selection, she has been instrumental in leading her team to numerous victories and was included in the 2025 MLive Miss Basketball watchlist after reaching her 1,000th career point this season.
Ava Mallar attended Pittsford High School in Pittsford, Michigan. Known for her scoring prowess with over 1,000 career points by her junior year and a record-setting game with eight three-pointers scored during a single match.
Alice Max played at Rochester High School in Rochester, Michigan. She has consistently led her team in key statistical categories such as points and rebounds over several seasons while earning All-State honors last year.
Madi Uyl completed her high school career at Dewitt High School in Dewitt, Michigan. Recognized for her defensive capabilities with multiple Defensive Player of the Year awards; she also boasts strong shooting accuracy from long range.
"The GVSU Women's Basketball Program is excited to welcome our incoming class of 2025! These five young ladies come with a wealth of talent and success," said Coach Williams regarding his new recruits' potential impact on continuing program success at GVSU Women's Basketball.
