A group of Republican lawmakers in Michigan is pushing forward a legislative package aimed at easing the financial burden on families. State Representatives Nancy DeBoer, Bill G. Schuette, and Kathy Schmaltz have introduced House Bills 4055-59, which propose measures such as a state child tax credit and exemptions from sales and use taxes for infant and toddler items like diapers. The bills also suggest establishing Child Care Savings Accounts to allow parents to deduct childcare-related deposits from their taxable income.
“Inflation has skyrocketed in recent years, and families need relief,” stated Rep. DeBoer. She emphasized the responsibility of representatives to advocate for positive changes that benefit their constituents.
Rep. Schuette highlighted the necessity of making Michigan an attractive place for families. “Michigan should be the best and most affordable state in the country to raise a family," he said. He stressed that these bills aim to alleviate financial pressures on families by allowing them to retain more of their earnings.
Rep. Schmaltz pointed out the challenges faced by parents due to rising costs of essentials like diapers and childcare. “The cost of diapers, childcare, and other essentials adds up quickly," she noted, advocating for support that enables parents to focus on raising healthy children.
These proposals were initially presented in October 2023 but did not advance under the Democratic majority at that time. Rep. Schuette expressed optimism about moving these bills forward now, stating: “House Republicans will continue to put the priorities of the people first.”
The proposed legislation has been referred to the Committee on Economic Competitiveness for further consideration.
