GVSU swim and dive teams lead after day one at GLIAC Championship

The GVSU swim and dive team made a strong start at the Holland Aquatic Center during the first day of the GLIAC Championship. The women's team scored 327 points, securing the first place position, while the men's team also leads with a score of 209.5.

A notable performance came from Harmon, Alvarez, Wager, and Proietti who set a new school record and became GLIAC Champions in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:41.71. In the women's 1000 free, Katie O'Connell finished fifth for the Lakers.

Sara Alvarez achieved victory in the 200 IM with a time of 2:01.91, setting another school record. Vittoria Proietti placed second in this event with a time of 1:47.36. Lucy Hedley secured first place in the 50 free with a time of 22.86, marking another school record.

The women's team continued their success as Harmon, Wager, Nixon, and Hedley won first place in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:33.20.

In diving events, Maddie Kooistra claimed first place in the women's one-meter dive with a score of 446.00, earning her fourth GLIAC Championship title.

On the men's side, Dies, Goh, Nunez Del Prado, and Scotto DiVetta secured third place in their initial event of the evening by finishing at 1:26.70.

Raul Briceno emerged victorious as a GLIAC Champion in the men's 1000 free with a time of 9:08.40. Esteban Nunez Del Prado claimed the GLIAC Champion title for the 200 IM with a time of 1:46.20.

Evan Scotto DiVetta tied for third place in the men's 50 free alongside an NMU swimmer with both recording times of 19.88 seconds. Matt Bosch took fifth place at 19.91 seconds while Dies finished seventh at 20.06 seconds.

The men's team also earned third place in the 200 freestyle relay through efforts by Nunez Del Prado, Scotto DiVetta, Dies, and Bosch who clocked in at 1:18.80.

Day two of competition is scheduled to begin with preliminaries starting at 10 a.m., offering more opportunities for updates via social media channels @gvsuswimdive on Instagram and @gvsuswim on Twitter.
