Grand Valley State University's (GVSU) women's basketball team secured their fourth consecutive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) regular season title. The Lakers achieved this by defeating Wayne State with a final score of 85-67 at home, improving their record to 26-2 overall and 16-1 in league play. This victory also earned them the number one seed in the upcoming conference tournament.
Throughout the game, GVSU maintained control, initially leading Wayne State 9-3. Despite some efforts from Wayne State to close the gap, key three-pointers from Avery Zeinstra and Abrie Cabana helped GVSU extend their lead. By the end of the first quarter, GVSU led 27-22.
In the second quarter, GVSU's advantage grew to 13 points after another three-pointer from Cabana. Although Wayne State managed an 8-0 run reducing the lead to five points, GVSU entered halftime ahead at 46-39.
Kathryn Schmidt opened the second half with a three-pointer for GVSU, which was soon followed by more successful plays from Cabana and MacKenzie Bisballe. As a result, GVSU maintained a double-digit lead through most of the third quarter and ended it leading 67-51.
Despite a brief rally by Wayne State in the final period, which reduced their deficit to eleven points at one stage, an effective response from GVSU solidified their win with an eventual twenty-point margin. This match marked Wayne State's twenty-second consecutive loss against GVSU.
Rylie Bisballe was notable with her contribution of 19 points alongside six rebounds and four steals. Abrie Cabana contributed significantly as well with five three-pointers totaling fifteen points while Ellie Droste added fourteen points. Off the bench, MacKenzie Bisballe delivered eleven points along with four assists and three blocks.
The Lakers displayed efficiency shooting over fifty percent both from field goals and beyond-the-arc while forcing numerous turnovers from Wayne State.
GVSU will remain on home court for their next game against SVSU on Saturday at 1:00 p.m., marking another chapter in what is known as "Battle of the Valleys."
