The Grand Valley State softball team faced setbacks on the second day of the Lewis Dome tournament in Rosemont, Illinois. The Lakers lost both games, first to Truman State with a score of 7-6 and then to St. Cloud State, who shut them out 5-0.
In their game against Truman State, GVSU initially took the lead with two runs in the first inning. Eliana Eiland's walk and subsequent steal set up Morgan Spicer for a triple that brought Eiland home. Elizabeth Wesoloski then grounded out to score Spicer. However, Truman State quickly responded with six runs in their half of the inning. A combination of hits, including a two-run homer, put them ahead 6-2.
GVSU narrowed the gap by scoring in the second inning when MaryJane Goodman reached third on an error and was driven home by Karli Dorr's groundout. In the third inning, Eiland again set things in motion with a single, eventually tying the game at 6-6 after contributions from Spicer and Goodman. Despite three scoreless innings from both teams following this rally, Truman State clinched victory with an RBI single in the seventh inning.
Eiland stood out for GVSU with a perfect batting performance (3-3), while Spicer contributed significantly as well (2-4). Dorr started as pitcher but took the loss after giving up six earned runs despite striking out seven batters.
In their matchup against St. Cloud State, GVSU fell behind early as their opponents scored in each of the first two innings and extended their lead further in later innings to secure a 5-0 win. Madelynn Pope led GVSU's offense going 2-3 at bat. Christine Duch pitched five innings but took the loss after allowing multiple runs; Kylie Swierkos provided one scoreless inning of relief.
The Lakers are scheduled to conclude their participation in the tournament with games against Winona State and Lewis tomorrow.
