The GVSU women's basketball team secured a commanding victory over SVSU, concluding the penultimate weekend of their regular season with a 93-56 win. This result leaves the Lakers with an impressive record of 27-2 overall and 17-1 in league play.
Kathryn Schmidt set the tone early with a three-pointer, sparking a 17-3 run for GVSU. The team capitalized on their first eight shots, including three-pointers from Abrie Cabana and Ellie Droste. Despite SVSU's efforts to close the gap, Paige Vanstee's layup and subsequent free throw extended GVSU's lead to 20-6 by the end of the first quarter.
SVSU began the second period with seven consecutive points, narrowing their deficit to five. However, Cabana's three-point play and Nicole Kamin's free throws reestablished a ten-point lead for GVSU. A late half surge pushed their advantage to 42-27 at halftime.
In the second half, GVSU continued to dominate with a 9-0 run, extending their lead to 51-27. Rylie Bisballe contributed significantly by surpassing 1,500 career points—an achievement reached by only six other players in program history. The Lakers maintained control throughout, entering the fourth quarter with a substantial lead of 66-39.
Although SVSU managed a brief comeback in the fourth quarter, reducing the gap to 21 points at one stage, GVSU responded decisively with a final 20-4 run. This victory not only secured them a season sweep against SVSU but also marked the senior class as the most successful in program history with their 134th win.
Key performances included Abrie Cabana scoring a team-high of 16 points along with five rebounds; Rylie Bisballe adding another 12 points; Ellie Droste and Paige Vanstee each contributing another dozen; MacKenzie Bisballe scoring ten points while maintaining perfect shooting accuracy; and Nicole Kamin providing defensive support with five steals. Overall, GVSU forced SVSU into committing 29 turnovers and scored heavily off these opportunities.
Looking ahead, GVSU will host Davenport University in Allendale on Tuesday as they enter the final week of regular-season play.
