GVSU men's golf team secures second place on day one in South Carolina

The GVSU men's golf team commenced their spring season at the Lander Bearcat Classic in Greenwood, South Carolina. The teams completed the first round and part of the second before darkness halted play. At the end of the day, GVSU held second place with two players in the top five.

Wingate University led with a score of 16 under par, while GVSU followed at six under. The Lakers shot an opening round of 285 (-3) and were three under through half of the second round when play was stopped. Lenoir-Rhyne University finished third at one under par, Flagler College fourth at one over, and Tusculum University fifth at three over.

Freshman Ryan Gallagher made an impressive debut by tying for third place at five under par. He scored a 69 (-3) in the first round with one eagle and a birdie and added three more birdies in the incomplete second round. Bryce Wheeler also tied for fourth after shooting a 69 in round one, finishing four under par with eight birdies.

Manuel Cue Vargas recorded five birdies to finish his first round at 73 (+1), tying for 31st place at two over par alongside Drew Coble, who shot a 74 (+2) with five birdies. Charlie Cooley ended day one tied for 61st after shooting a 78 (+6), making six birdies to conclude six over par.

The Lakers are scheduled to resume play tomorrow morning at 8:30 for the final round and a half.
