The GVSU men's golf team secured a second-place finish at the Lander Bearcat Classic, marking their first tournament of the spring season. Three players from the Lakers achieved top 10 finishes.
Wingate University emerged victorious in the competition with scores of 287, 276, and 284, concluding at -17. GVSU shot a final round of 276 (-10), ending the tournament at -13. USC Aiken took third place with six under par, followed by Lenoir-Rhyne at even par in fourth place. The host team, Lander University, completed the top five with a score of +9.
Bryce Wheeler led the Lakers by tying for third place with seven under par, making four birdies in his last round of 70 (-2). Ryan Gallagher and Manuel Cue Vargas both tied for seventh at -3. Gallagher's final round was a 73 (+1) featuring four birdies. Cue carded an impressive 66 (-6), achieving seven birdies, including six consecutive on the front nine. Drew Coble delivered his best performance of the tournament today, climbing up 16 spots to tie for 26th place after sinking six birdies in his final round of 70 (-2). Charlie Cooley ended in a tie for 41st with a +7 score after shooting even par and making five birdies in his final round.
Next on their schedule is participation in the Ralph Hargett Memorial set to take place in North Carolina on March 17-18.
