The GVSU women's lacrosse team secured a victory against Colorado Mesa on Thursday night, concluding the game with a 14-7 win. This triumph marks their third consecutive win at the start of the season.
The match began with Ashleigh Rothe scoring the first goal for the Lakers, assisted by Gracie Bancroft. The Mavericks responded with two goals, taking an early lead of 2-1. Bancroft managed to equalize before Colorado Mesa scored again just before the end of the first quarter, leading 3-2.
In the second quarter, Colorado Mesa extended their lead with another goal. However, GVSU countered with goals from Rothe and Emerson Holthouser, tying the game at 4-4 by halftime.
GVSU dominated the third quarter, scoring five unanswered goals to take a commanding 9-4 lead. Rothe contributed two goals and an assist during this period, while Bancroft also scored twice. Jillian Bingman added one goal and one assist.
The Lakers continued their momentum into the fourth quarter with Bingman scoring off an assist from Rothe and Ella Boose adding another goal. Although Colorado Mesa managed to score three more times, Kendra Swope and Kayleigh Sandell each scored for GVSU to secure their victory.
Rothe finished with six points from four goals and two assists. Bancroft achieved a hat trick and added an assist. Boose and Bingman each scored twice, with Bingman also recording an assist. Swope, Holthouser, and Sandell each contributed one goal; Swope also had an assist.
Goalkeepers Kaylyn Cater and Sarah Krause shared duties in net for GVSU, combining for six saves over 60 minutes of play. Kylie Waeghe led defensively with four groundballs and caused two turnovers. Ainsley Shilling picked up five groundballs along with two caused turnovers.
The Lakers will remain in Colorado to face Regis on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 Eastern time.
