The Grand Valley State University (GVSU) women's basketball team secured a spot in the GLIAC Tournament Championship for the fourth consecutive year by defeating Wayne State 78-54. The Lakers will face Ferris State in the championship game scheduled for tomorrow at 3:00 PM.
Wayne State started strong with a 7-0 run, but GVSU responded with six consecutive points, beginning with a three-pointer from Abrie Cabana. Despite another scoring streak from Wayne State, GVSU closed the first quarter with a 9-2 run, tying the game at 15 after Avery Zeinstra's three-pointer.
In the second quarter, MacKenzie Bisballe initiated an 11-1 run that gave GVSU a 26-16 lead. Nicole Kamin then contributed to a 12-4 run to end the half, extending the Lakers' lead to 38-22.
Abrie Cabana's jumpers early in the second half increased GVSU's advantage to 20 points. The lead reached as much as 24 points before settling at 23 by the end of the third quarter, with GVSU ahead 59-36.
Nicole Kamin had an impressive performance, achieving a career-high of 24 points on efficient shooting. "Kamin got a breakaway layup, then hit a three the following possession to give herself a new career-high with 24 points." She also contributed six rebounds, five steals, and two blocks. Paige Vanstee added ten points and three steals while Rylie Bisballe recorded nine points, six rebounds, and four assists. The Lakers' defense forced Wayne State into committing 28 turnovers and generated 19 steals.
GVSU is set to compete against Ferris State at their home venue tomorrow afternoon.
