Mac Carruth returns to Grand Valley State as assistant head coach

Grand Valley State University has announced the appointment of Mac Carruth as the assistant head coach and defensive line coach for its football program. Carruth, a former linebacker for GVSU, previously served as the defensive line coach at Saginaw Valley State.

"We are extremely excited to welcome Coach Mac Carruth home to Grand Valley State," said Scott Wooster, head football coach at GVSU. "He has a unique coaching journey and his recent trajectory of the performance of his position group is incredible. Combine this with his experiences in Allendale, on campus, and in Lubbers Stadium; as well has his life experiences bring tremendous value to us and made this a perfect fit."

Carruth joined Saginaw Valley State University's defensive staff in 2019 as a linebacker coach before becoming the primary defensive line coach in 2022. During his time there, he mentored five players who earned All-GLIAC honors, including Leonard Henry who was named GLIAC Defensive Lineman of the Year in 2024. The Cardinal defense achieved high national rankings in scoring defense, total defense, and rushing defense under his guidance.

"It is great to be home," Carruth expressed. "Grand Valley helped mold me into the man I am today. I am so blessed to serve these young men and work at this great university. I am very appreciative of this opportunity and Tradition Never Graduates."

Before joining Saginaw Valley State University, Carruth was a defensive coach at Bridgeport High School where he contributed to their first playoff appearance in nearly two decades.

As a player for GVSU, Carruth was recognized twice as an All-GLIAC performer with impressive career statistics including 187 tackles and 20 tackles for loss. His tenure saw GVSU achieve four National Championships and four GLIAC titles.

Carruth resides with his wife Beyonca and their children Kameron (12) and Ka'Mya Marlee.
