State Representative Nancy DeBoer, a Republican from Holland, joined her colleagues in a press conference to express their opposition to the Michigan High School Athletic Association's (MHSAA) policy allowing male athletes to compete in female sports.
“There is no question that males and females are different biologically,” DeBoer stated. “Our girls deserve the right to fair competition. Allowing boys to compete in girls’ sports is not only unfair—it undermines the integrity of female athletics and puts our girls at risk.”
The press conference followed the passage of House Resolution 40, which urges the MHSAA to update its eligibility rules in accordance with Executive Order 14201. This federal order aims to maintain fairness and safety in female athletic competitions. The MHSAA has yet to adjust its policies to comply with this directive.
DeBoer referenced Riley Gaines, an athlete who faced similar challenges when her male competitor was awarded the sole first-place trophy after they tied in a women's swimming event. “I have spoken with Riley Gaines who has experienced this issue first-hand,” DeBoer said. “We cannot allow another young woman’s dedication and hard work to be overshadowed by unfair policies. I am proud to stand with fellow women in supporting to keep the integrity of girls’ sports and call on the MHSAA to re-think their take on this issue.”
