The Grand Valley State women's tennis team faced a setback on Friday, falling 5-2 against UIC, a Division I opponent. This result brings the Lakers' season record to 6-3.
In doubles competition, UIC secured victories at both the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. The duo of Ipek Sakiroglu and Kalomoira Ralli managed a win for GVSU at No. 3 doubles with a score of 6-3. Neus Ramos and Vale Mozas narrowly lost their match at the top doubles spot with a score of 4-6, while Rachel Sam and Estefania Hernandez were defeated in another close match at No. 2 doubles, also by a score of 4-6.
During singles matches, Estefania Hernandez emerged victorious with a straight-set win of 7-5, 6-3 at No. 4 singles. Kalomoira Ralli achieved success in her three-set match at No. 6 singles, winning with scores of 3-6, 6-4, and 6-2. However, Neus Ramos was defeated in straight sets (3-6, 3-6) at the top singles position. Vale Mozas lost her match in three sets (6-3, 3-6, 3-6) at No. 2 singles; Anna Soteras also fell in three sets (6-3, 3-6, 2-6) at No. 3 singles; and Ipek Sakiroglu was defeated with scores of (6-7, 4-6) at No.5 singles.
Looking ahead to conference play next week, GVSU will host Roosevelt on March 21st at Premier Athletic and Tennis Club starting at noon. They will then face Purdue Northwest on March 22nd at the same venue with play beginning at five o'clock in the evening.
