GVSU women's lacrosse secures victory over Walsh

The GVSU women's lacrosse team continued their season on the road with a game against Walsh in North Canton, Ohio. The Lakers secured a 9-5 victory after outscoring the Cavaliers 5-1 in the second half.

GVSU started strong with goals from Isabella De La Cerda and Kendra Swope, leading 2-0 early in the first quarter. Walsh responded with three consecutive goals to take a 3-2 lead. Ashleigh Rothe tied the game at three just before the end of the first quarter.

In a defensive second quarter, neither team scored for most of the period until Zoe Ziegler put GVSU ahead again with an assist from Leah Leonard. However, Walsh equalized shortly before halftime, leaving the score tied at four.

Walsh took an early lead in the third quarter but failed to score again as GVSU's defense tightened. Gracie Bancroft scored next for GVSU, assisted by Jillian Bingman. Ziegler added another goal and then assisted Rothe for an additional point, giving GVSU an 8-5 advantage going into the final quarter.

Bancroft scored once more in the fourth quarter from another Bingman assist. The Laker defense limited Walsh to only three shots and forced two turnovers to secure their win.

Gracie Bancroft, Zoe Ziegler, and Ashleigh Rothe each scored twice for GVSU. Ziegler also contributed two assists. Isabella De La Cerda, Kendra Swope, and Jillian Bingman each added one goal; Bingman had two assists while Leah Leonard recorded one assist.

Kylie Waeghe led with three groundballs while Kaylyn Cater was instrumental in goal alongside Sarah Krause as they combined for seven saves.

Next up for GVSU is a match against Ashland tomorrow at 1:00 PM in Ohio.
