GVSU women's lacrosse team defeated by Maryville in home opener

The Grand Valley State University (GVSU) women's lacrosse team hosted Maryville in their first home game of the 2025 season. The match, characterized by strong defensive play, saw Maryville secure a 10-5 victory after gaining momentum with a 4-0 run in the second quarter.

Maryville initiated the scoring with two early goals. GVSU's Grace Maddox responded before the end of the first quarter. However, Maryville dominated the second quarter, extending their lead to 6-1 by halftime.

The Saints continued their offensive push in the third period, increasing their advantage to 7-1. Jillian Bingman scored for GVSU with an assist from Ashleigh Rothe, but Maryville added two more goals. Bingman managed another goal for GVSU before Maryville closed the third quarter leading 10-3.

In the final quarter, Kendra Swope scored twice for GVSU, reducing the deficit to half but unable to turn the tide for a comeback.

Swope and Bingman each contributed two goals for GVSU, while Maddox added one. Rothe provided two assists and recorded six draw controls; Ainsley Shilling had one assist and three draw controls. Goalkeepers Kaylyn Cater and Sarah Krause made a combined total of 13 saves over equal playing time.

On defense, Kylie Waeghe and Gracie Bancroft collected four ground balls each; Elora Ferrie also tallied three ground balls. Waeghe and Ferrie were instrumental in causing turnovers during the game.

Looking ahead, GVSU will remain at home to face UIndy on Sunday at noon.
