The Grand Valley State University (GVSU) softball team began their conference schedule with a doubleheader sweep against Roosevelt in Rosemont, Illinois. The Lakers secured victories in both games, winning the first 11-3 and the second 13-6. These wins marked head coach Dana Callihan's 400th career victory.
In the first game, GVSU established an early lead with a three-run second inning. Carsyn Segorski initiated scoring with an RBI single that brought Karli Dorr home. Eliana Eiland and Faith Edwards followed up by adding to the score, giving GVSU a 3-0 advantage. Roosevelt narrowed the gap in the third inning but could not maintain momentum as GVSU responded with three more runs in the fourth inning, aided by a Roosevelt error and contributions from Faith Wesoloski and Grace Usher.
GVSU further extended their lead with additional runs in the fifth and sixth innings, including a solo home run by Usher. Pitcher Nevaeh Ingram completed all six innings for GVSU, allowing three runs while striking out seven.
In game two, GVSU continued their strong performance by taking an early lead again. Despite Roosevelt briefly taking control of the game with a 3-2 lead after one inning, GVSU quickly reclaimed it through consistent scoring across multiple innings. Madelynn Pope's triple was crucial during this period, driving in several runs to secure their advantage.
Key performances included Elizabeth Wesoloski going 4-5 at bat with two runs scored; Grace Usher delivering three RBIs; Madelynn Pope achieving two triples along with multiple RBIs; and pitcher Karli Dorr providing effective relief over five innings.
The Lakers are set to continue their Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play against Parkside on March 22nd in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The games will be available via live stream on FloSports or followed through live stats at gvsulakers.com.
