The Grand Valley State University softball team experienced a setback during their doubleheader against Ferris State on Tuesday afternoon in Big Rapids, Michigan. The Lakers dropped both games, the first with a score of 5-4 and the second game 3-1. This result brings the Lakers to a record of 15-17 overall and 6-4 in the GLIAC conference.
In the first game, GVSU took the initial lead when Grace Usher hit a solo home run in the second inning. Ferris State struck back with four runs in the fifth inning, gaining a three-run advantage. The Bulldogs scored off a two-run single and two RBI singles. The Lakers narrowed Ferris State's lead in the sixth inning, with Elizabeth Wesoloski's single scoring Faith Edwards, who had tripled earlier in the inning. However, the Bulldogs increased their lead in their half of the sixth, and despite two late runs by the Lakers in the seventh, they fell short at 5-4.
Statistically, Elizabeth Wesoloski performed well with two hits out of three at-bats, securing an RBI. Faith Edwards contributed with a triple, a run, and an RBI. Grace Usher's performance featured her second home run of the season. Pitcher Karli Dorr was in the circle for the entire game one, allowing four earned runs and striking out three, yet ended with a loss.
In game two, the Lakers scored first with a sacrifice fly hit by Usher, bringing Faith Edwards home. The tie came in the fourth inning from Ferris State's RBI single. The Bulldogs then moved ahead in the fifth inning and secured their victory with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. GVSU managed one hit apiece from Grace Usher, Eliana Eiland, and Carsyn Segorski. Edwards scored the only run for the Lakers in the game. Pitcher Nevaeh Ingram took the loss, pitching all six innings with two earned runs and four strikeouts.
Looking ahead, the Lakers will travel for a pair of conference doubleheaders. They are scheduled to play Wayne State in Detroit on Saturday, April 5, at 1:00 PM, and then against Saginaw Valley State in University Center, Michigan on Sunday, April 6, at 12:00 PM.
