The Grand Valley State University (GVSU) women's lacrosse team achieved a notable victory over Northern Michigan on Friday night in Allendale, Michigan. The Lakers demonstrated a strong performance in the first half, securing an 11-4 win after leading 8-0 at the break.
Kendra Swope began the game with two goals, aided by an assist from Jillian Bingman on the second. Goals from Ella Boose and Swope, who completed her hat trick with just 17 seconds left in the first period, further established GVSU's control. Ashleigh Rothe started the second period with two goals, followed by Swope's fourth. Grace Maddox concluded the first half scoring, with a goal assisted by Bingman, making it 8-0.
Indira Marker extended GVSU's lead to 9-0 early in the subsequent quarter. The Wildcats scored their first goal just before the end of the quarter, which finished at 9-1. Entering the fourth period, Northern Michigan scored another goal, but Bingman replied, bringing the Lakers' total to double digits. After another Northern Michigan goal, Zoe Ziegler assisted Boose for GVSU's 11th goal. The Wildcats scored the final goal, ending the match at 11-4.
The Lakers' defense was noteworthy, with goalkeepers combining for 16 saves on 25 shots. Kaylyn Cater contributed seven saves in the first half, while Sarah Krause added nine in the second. The defense compelled seven turnovers, with Karleigh Rothe responsible for three. Bingman collected six groundballs, Rothe added five, and Kylie Waeghe secured three.
Swope led the offensive drive with four goals and an assist, while Boose and Ashleigh Rothe scored two goals each. Bingman, Maddox, and Marker each contributed one goal. Bingman provided two assists, with Ziegler offering one.
Looking ahead, the Lakers will conclude their home weekend with a Senior Day match against Concordia-St. Paul on Sunday, honoring five players who have significantly contributed to the team's success.
