Lakers clinch GLIAC title with victory over Davenport, remain unbeaten in regular season

The Grand Valley State men's tennis team celebrated a significant victory, securing a perfect 7-0 record in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) after defeating Davenport with a 6-1 score on Friday. This win marks their second GLIAC regular season championship in the program's history.

The Lakers demonstrated strong performance in doubles matches, sweeping all three encounters. Victor Lopes and Patricio Sepulveda led the charge with a 6-1 victory at the top position. Stephen Claassen and Lawrence Ivanov followed up with a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles, while Denys Zamaraiev and Chimo Minguez secured a 6-3 victory at No. 3 doubles.

In the singles matches, Victor Lopes earned a hard-fought three-set win at No. 2 singles, finishing 6-2, 1-6, 7-5. Jorge Ruiz achieved a straight-set victory, 7-6, 6-3, at No. 3 singles. Patricio Sepulveda and Ignasi Garros also won in straight sets at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively. Chimo Minguez added another win for the Lakers in a three-set match at No. 6 singles. Despite a strong effort, Denys Zamaraiev faced a narrow three-set defeat at the top singles spot.

The Lakers are now set to compete in the GLIAC tournament quarterfinals, starting next Friday, April 25. As the top seed, they await the determination of their quarterfinal opponent.
