Grand Valley State wins NCAA tournament opener against Tiffin

The Grand Valley State men's tennis team secured a victory in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, defeating Tiffin with a score of 4-1 on Friday afternoon. This win improves the Lakers' record to 17-2 for the season and allows them to move forward to the second round.

Tiffin managed to take the doubles point by winning at both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles positions. However, Denys Zamaraiev and Chimo Minguez achieved a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles for GVSU. In other matches, Victor Lopes and Lucas Gonzalez faced a narrow defeat with a score of 3-6 at the top doubles position, while Stephen Claassen and Lawrence Ivanov also lost with a score of 3-6 at No. 2 doubles.

During singles play, Denys Zamaraiev delivered a strong performance with a straight-set victory of 6-4, 6-3 at the top singles spot. Jorge Ruiz followed suit with another straight-set win of 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 singles. Patricio Sepulveda clinched the overall win for GVSU by securing a convincing victory of 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 singles. Additionally, Ignasi Garros added to the success with his own straight-set triumph of 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6 singles.

The Lakers will proceed to face either Rockhurst or Drury in their next match scheduled for Saturday, May 10th in Allendale at the GVSU Tennis Courts, starting at 11:00 AM.
