State Representative Angela Rigas has led the Michigan House in approving new school safety measures. The legislation focuses on enhancing the state's violence prevention tipline, OK2SAY. House Bill 4258, introduced by Rigas, mandates that tips submitted to the line must be reported to schools, local law enforcement, and other relevant authorities within 24 hours.

"Timely action saves lives," stated Rigas. "This is a much-needed reform to ensure that no critical tip goes unanswered. The safety of our children must remain our top priority."

The OK2SAY program allows students, parents, school personnel, and community members to report threats or criminal activities confidentially. Under the new bill, there will be no delays in relaying tips to those who can respond promptly.

House Bill 4258 is part of a larger school safety initiative pushed forward by Michigan House Republicans. Other proposals include enhanced safety planning, incorporating tip line contact information on student ID cards, and revising active shooter drill protocols.

"I’ve seen firsthand the devastating impact when reports go unaddressed," said Rigas. "This legislation ensures students know that if they speak up, they’ll be heard—and that adults are ready to act to protect them."

The bill was passed by the House with a vote of 101-5.
