The Grand Valley State men's tennis team has progressed to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA National Championship, holding a fifth-place rank in the NCAA's reseeding. The Lakers will compete against No. 12 Columbus State on Tuesday, May 20th at 8:00 AM in Altamonte Springs, Florida.
This marks a historic moment for GVSU as it is their first time advancing to nationals. They achieved this milestone by defeating Tiffin with a score of 4-1 in the first round and Rockhurst with a score of 4-0 in the second round within the Midwest Region. As the top seed in their region, they hosted these initial rounds of the NCAA Tournament.
GVSU enters nationals boasting an impressive overall record of 18-2. They secured the GLIAC Regular Season Championship for only the second time in their history, maintaining an undefeated conference record of 7-0. Additionally, they clinched their first-ever GLIAC Tournament Championship by overcoming Wayne State with a decisive 4-0 victory in the final match. The Lakers are currently on a winning streak of 12 matches and have remained unbeaten at home this season.
Columbus State arrives at nationals with an overall record of 13-10. As the fourth seed in the Southeast Regional, they defeated Lincoln Memorial with a score of 4-1 in their opening match and then upset top-seeded Flagler College with a score of 4-2 to secure their place at nationals.
