Matt Hall, State Representative of Michigan, announced that the House has approved a local roads funding plan that avoids new taxes or debt. He urged the state Senate to work toward an agreement. The statement was made on X.

"Michigan House Republicans have passed a Roads Plan that delivers vital support to local roads connecting driveways to highways, strategically redirects existing resources, eliminates corporate earmarks, and cuts wasteful spending," said Matthew Richard Hall, State Representative from Michigan. "No new taxes. No new debt. Just need MI Senate Dems to come to the table to get this done for Michigan drivers."

According to Bridge Michigan, Michigan House Republicans have proposed a local roads funding plan that would redirect sales tax revenue from fuel purchases to transportation projects. This proposal aims to address deteriorating infrastructure but has sparked partisan debate. Republicans emphasize the urgency of road repairs, while Democrats express concerns about potential impacts on school funding and state budgets.

The Michigan Transportation Asset Management Council’s 2023 report indicates that only 25% of Michigan’s local roads are rated in "good" condition, with 41% classified as "poor." Infrastructure spending reached a record $3.7 billion in 2023, underscoring ongoing challenges in road maintenance.

A review by the Midwest Economic Policy Institute for 2024 notes that Michigan relies more heavily on sales tax for road funding compared to its Midwest neighbors. States like Ohio and Indiana use fuel taxes and vehicle fees, which often result in higher and more consistent per-mile road funding.

Ballotpedia reports that Matt Hall is the Republican Minority Leader of the Michigan House. He is recognized for his leadership on infrastructure and economic policy and is a leading advocate for increased road funding and regulatory reform.
