Grand Valley State University and Pittsburg State University have agreed to extend their football series, scheduling a matchup for week one of the 2028 season. The game will take place on Thursday, August 31, at Lubbers Stadium in Allendale, Michigan. This announcement comes ahead of their upcoming meeting this Saturday at Carnie Smith Stadium in Pittsburg, Kansas.
The two teams are recognized as the most successful Division II football programs based on wins and winning percentage. Their first encounter was during the 2023 NCAA Division II playoffs, where Grand Valley State secured a 24-21 victory.
"We are so appreciative of Pittsburg State agreeing to extend the series for a future game in 2028," said Grand Valley State Director of Athletics Keri Becker. "The goal for Grand Valley State football is to play non-conference opponents that compete at the highest level in Division II football and Pittsburg State certainly fits that need. Head coach Scott Wooster and our student-athletes want challenging games that will prepare them for the opportunity to play NCAA postseason games."
Currently ranked #3, Grand Valley State holds a record of 2-0 this season after defeating Black Hills State 48-36. Pittsburg State, ranked #16 with an 0-2 record, recently lost to Central Oklahoma by a score of 27-24.
"We are excited to have the opportunity to extend the series against a premier program like Grand Valley State with this game three years from now in the 2028 season," stated Pitt State Vice President of Athletics Jim Johnson. "All of our future scheduling efforts are designed to help Coach Anthony and our Pitt State student-athletes compete at the highest level and ultimately challenge for NCAA postseason opportunities."
Grand Valley State leads all schools across FBS, FCS, and Division II with a .748 winning percentage (456-153-3) and has claimed four national championships (2002, 2003, 2005, 2006) along with six appearances in title games. Pittsburg State holds the record for most victories among Division II programs with 760 wins and has earned two national championships (1991, 2011) while appearing in five championship games.
