#3 Grand Valley State University lost 17-14 to #16 Pittsburg State on Saturday night at Carnie Smith Stadium, where 8,350 spectators attended. The Lakers will have a two-week break before their next game, which is scheduled for October 4 against Davenport in the GLIAC opener at Lubbers Stadium.

Pittsburg State established a 10-0 lead by halftime after scoring twice in the second quarter. The Gorillas first completed an 11-play, 55-yard drive that ended with a successful 53-yard field goal. After intercepting a pass from Grand Valley State, Pittsburg State then moved the ball 54 yards over eight plays. A GVSU offsides penalty on fourth down extended the drive, culminating in quarterback Jackson Berry connecting with wide receiver Kuron Parchmon for a 17-yard touchdown.

Grand Valley State responded in the third quarter when senior linebacker Riley Simpson returned a fumble for a touchdown over 95 yards—the longest such play in program history. Later, Paschal Jolman scored on a 19-yard run after the Lakers drove for ten plays and covered 69 yards, giving them a temporary lead of 14-10.

However, Pittsburg State answered with its own ten-play drive spanning 75 yards to regain and hold onto the lead at 17-14.

Quarterback Andrew Schuster completed fourteen of twenty-seven passes for one hundred fifty yards. Sean Byrd made four receptions totaling fifty-three yards; running back Syone Usma-Harper caught four passes for twenty-nine yards and carried ten times for forty-one rushing yards. On defense, linebacker Anthony Cardamone recorded ten tackles while Torian Wyatt contributed eight tackles.
