Grand Valley State leads Folds of Honor Challenge after opening round

The Grand Valley State men's golf team opened its only home event of the fall season, the Folds of Honor Challenge, with a strong performance. After the first round at Meadows Golf Course in Allendale, Michigan, the Lakers hold a nine-shot lead over their competitors. All nine participating GVSU golfers are positioned within the top 15 on the leaderboard.

The team finished with a score of 283, placing them at one under par for the day. Odessa is currently in second place at eight over par, while Mississippi Gulf Coast follows at ten over. Dallas Baptist, Wayne State, and Aurora are tied for fourth place at twelve over par.

Senior Charlie Cooley is in second place individually after shooting a 69 (-2) with four birdies. Bryce Wheeler sits one stroke behind Cooley in third place after carding a 70 (-1), also making four birdies. Maverick Conaway and Manuel Cue Vargas are tied for tenth after both shot rounds of 72 (+1), each recording three birdies. Freshman Emil Olofsson is tied for fifteenth following his round of 74 (+3) that included four birdies.

Four additional Lakers—Murphy Kehoe, Andrew Gwilliams, Ryan Gallagher, and Finley Dober—competed as individuals in this tournament. Kehoe and Gwilliams are tied for fourth after both posted even-par rounds of 71; Kehoe made five birdies while Gwilliams recorded two eagles and one birdie. Gallagher is tied for tenth after shooting a 72 (+1) with three birdies and an eagle. Dober is tied for fifteenth following his round of 74 (+3) with two birdies.

The Lakers will resume play tomorrow morning starting at 8:00.
