Matt Hall, State Representative of Michigan, announced that he and Education Secretary Linda McMahon visited Detroit schools to gather input and emphasized collaboration with the Trump administration on reform. This statement was made on X.
"Secretary of Education Linda McMahon and I visited several great schools in Detroit today," said Matthew Richard Hall, Michigan State Representative for 42nd District (R). "We wanted to hear directly from teachers, students and administrators about what they need to succeed -- we heard some great perspective and interesting ideas. The Trump Administration is tackling education reform head on this year. Michigan House Republicans have been working very closely with President Trump, and we're looking forward to pursuing strong education reforms together so that every student has a chance to succeed."
According to the U.S. Department of Education, in September 2025, Secretary McMahon visited multiple schools in Detroit, Michigan, as part of her "Returning Education to the States Tour." The tour highlighted charter, magnet, private, and public schools while promoting school choice and state control over education. This initiative has sparked debate about the Trump administration’s push to reduce federal oversight.
The Michigan Department of Education reported that 2025 state assessment data showed grades 5–7 achieved their highest English Language Arts proficiency rates in three years. Similarly, grades 4–7 reached comparable highs in math; however, proficiency among younger grades remains low, and overall statewide performance is still below pre-pandemic levels.
A 2025 Education Recovery Scorecard report found that Michigan ranks 44th among states in reading recovery but 17th in math recovery since 2019. Students are averaging 0.76 grade levels behind in reading and 0.4 behind in math, highlighting the state’s uneven rebound compared to national benchmarks.
