Grand Valley State men's golf sets multiple records en route to UIndy Invitational win

Grand Valley State University's men's golf team achieved a significant victory at the UIndy Invitational in Indianapolis, Indiana, setting or tying six school records over three rounds. The Lakers secured their second win of the fall season with a 23-stroke lead.

The team set new benchmarks for lowest scores in 18-hole, 36-hole, and 54-hole categories. Their second-round score of 269 established a new record for an 18-hole round. The combined scores from the second and third rounds totaled 539, marking a new best for 36 holes. The overall total of 813 set a new school record for a 54-hole event by surpassing the previous mark by 15 strokes.

On an individual level, Maverick Conaway shot a final round of 62 (10 under par), breaking the program's single-round scoring record by two strokes. Bryce Wheeler won the invitational and matched the school's best-ever score over two rounds with a total of 132, while also setting a new record for lowest three-round total at 201 (15 under par).

Wheeler posted scores of 68, 64, and 69 across his rounds to secure his second career tournament victory. He made eighteen birdies and one eagle during play to finish at -15, beating the previous school record by one stroke. Charlie Cooley finished tied for second place at -11 after shooting five under par in his final round with four birdies and an eagle.

Conaway and Andrew Gwilliams shared fourth place at nine under par. Conaway's final round included six birdies and two eagles as he moved up from twentieth position on the leaderboard after earlier rounds. Gwilliams carded three birdies in his closing round to notch back-to-back top-five finishes.

Manuel Cue Vargas finished tied for eleventh place at five under par after recording two birdies and an eagle in his even-par final round. Ryan Gallagher ended tied for forty-sixth place at five over par following his last-round score that included three birdies.

The Lakers will return to competition October 13-14 at the Copperhead Championship.
