The Grand Valley State University women's soccer team, ranked third nationally, will travel to Michigan's Upper Peninsula for two conference games this weekend. The Lakers are scheduled to play Northern Michigan University on Friday, September 26 in Marquette at 1:00 PM and Michigan Tech on Sunday, September 28 in Houghton at noon.
Grand Valley State recently opened its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) schedule with a win against Saginaw Valley State. The Lakers defeated the Cardinals 2-0, bringing their overall record to 4-1 and their conference record to 1-0. Alli French scored the game’s first goal in the sixth minute—her second of the season—while Sonya Mehta recorded her first career goal as a Laker in the 61st minute. Defender Acadia Murphy was recognized as GLIAC defensive player of the week after playing all 90 minutes and contributing to a defense that did not allow any shots on goal.
Sophomore Sarah Fromm leads the team with three goals and six points this season. Junior Alli French has two goals and four points, leading the squad with 14 shots, eight of which were on target. Freshman Cora Conley currently leads the GLIAC with three assists. Both junior Sonya Mehta and freshman Ivy Wilhelm have tallied one goal and one assist each for three points apiece. Freshman goalkeeper Macie Hunter started against Saginaw Valley State and earned her first collegiate shutout.
Friday’s matchup will be the 45th meeting between Grand Valley State and Northern Michigan. The Lakers hold a dominant advantage in the series history with a record of 37 wins, three losses, and four draws. Northern Michigan enters the weekend with an overall record of 1-2-3 and is 1-1 in conference play. They began their GLIAC campaign by defeating Roosevelt but lost their next match against Parkside. Six different players have scored for Northern Michigan this season; freshman Addison Frantti provided the game-winning goal against Roosevelt and has also contributed an assist. In goal, junior Jillian Thompson has made five starts with 17 saves while freshman Carly Sides made eight saves in her last appearance.
Michigan Tech currently stands at 1-4-1 overall, having suffered all four losses at home but is unbeaten through two conference matches (one win, one draw). Freshman Peyton Wetzel leads Tech with three goals from eight shots; junior Allison Millina has added a goal and an assist including a decisive score versus Roosevelt; senior Bri Barrows has started every match in net making a total of 36 saves.
