The Grand Valley State University women's soccer team, ranked third nationally, defeated Northern Michigan University 4-0 in an away match on Friday. This win brings the Lakers' season record to 5-1 and their GLIAC conference record to 2-0.
Mackenzie Ford scored the opening goal in the 29th minute with a free kick that went through the goalkeeper's hands. Three minutes later, Ivy Wilhelm made it 2-0 after receiving a deflected corner from Sophia Morgan via Vesna Dennison and finishing into the bottom left corner of the net.
In the 38th minute, Kacy Lauer extended GVSU’s lead to 3-0 by heading in a loose ball following another corner kick from Morgan. In the second half, Sarah From converted a penalty kick in the 72nd minute for her fourth goal of the season, finalizing the score at 4-0.
GVSU limited Northern Michigan to three shots in the second half and no corner kicks, maintaining their shutout. The Lakers outshot their opponents 27-6 overall and held a 15-2 advantage in shots on goal. They also recorded twelve corner kicks compared to two for Northern Michigan.
Ford registered her first career game-winning goal during her 76 minutes on the field. Lauer led GVSU with four shots on target over 81 minutes and added a goal. From finished with one goal on four attempts, while Wilhelm contributed one goal from two shots. Morgan and Dennison each provided an assist. Goalkeeper Macie Hunter started and secured her second consecutive shutout with two saves, improving her personal record to 3-0.
