Grand Valley State women’s soccer defeats Michigan Tech 4-0

The Grand Valley State University women's soccer team, ranked third nationally, secured a 4-0 victory over Michigan Tech on Sunday in Houghton, Michigan. This win improves the Lakers' record to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), while Michigan Tech drops to 1-6-1 overall and 1-2-1 in conference play.

Alli French opened the scoring for GVSU in the 22nd minute after receiving a pass from Sonya Mehta. French outran a defender and scored with her right foot for her third goal of the season. The Lakers controlled the first half, outshooting Michigan Tech 16-2 and taking a one-goal lead into halftime.

In the second half, Amanda Palmer extended GVSU's lead with a header in the 67th minute. Sophia Morgan provided the assist by sending a ball toward the left post that Palmer finished for her first goal of the season. Morgan now has two assists this year.

GVSU added two more goals late in the match. Sonya Mehta scored in the 87th minute with an assist from Ivy Wilhelm, marking Mehta’s second goal of the season. Two minutes later, Lacy Lauer capitalized on a deflected pass from Morgan to score her second goal of the year.

The Lakers held significant advantages throughout, recording a 34-3 edge in shots and limiting Michigan Tech to just one shot on target. GVSU also earned seven corner kicks while not allowing any for their opponent. Alli French contributed three shots along with her game-winning goal; Sonya Mehta led all players with seven shots and added both a goal and an assist; Sophia Morgan registered two assists; Sarah Fromm and Ivy Wilhelm each had an assist as well. Acadia Murphy and Mackenzie Ford played all ninety minutes, while goalkeeper Macie Hunter recorded her third consecutive shutout with one save.

GVSU will return home next weekend to host Parkside on Friday, October 3rd at GVSU Soccer Field. The match is scheduled to begin at 5:00 PM and will be streamed live on FloCollege through links available at gvsulakers.com.
