Grand Valley State University's junior varsity football team secured a 64-18 win against Detroit Christian College on Sunday night at Lubbers Stadium. The game featured only redshirt and true freshmen for the Lakers.
The Lakers started strong, leading 13-0 in the first quarter. Quarterback Ethan Plumb connected with wide receiver Alex McLean for a 33-yard touchdown pass to begin the scoring. Kicker Jay Cady made the extra point, giving GVSU a 7-0 lead. Running back ArJon Thompson caught a 7-yard swing pass from Plumb for another touchdown. Cady added two field goals from 27 and 44 yards, and Thompson scored on a 3-yard run, putting Grand Valley State ahead 25-12 at halftime.
In the second half, Grand Valley State added 18 points in the third quarter and 21 more in the fourth to reach their final total.
The Lakers' offense produced a total of 551 yards, including 289 passing yards and 264 rushing yards. Plumb completed 13 of his 21 passes for 171 yards and four touchdowns. Noah Oury also contributed by completing six of twelve passes for 116 yards and one touchdown. Running back Khylan Osbey carried the ball fourteen times for 164 yards, including an eighty-five yard touchdown run. Thompson added forty rushing yards on ten carries.
Ten different receivers caught passes during the game. Wide receiver Abram Larner had four receptions for thirty-two yards and one touchdown. Thompson caught three passes for fifty yards, while McLean had two catches for forty-six yards and one touchdown. Bwana Miller recorded two catches totaling seventy-six yards, including a forty-five yard touchdown.
On defense, Benji Allen led with ten tackles. Deshawne Phillips, Jordan Jackson, and Isaac Poot each made five tackles. Jackson was credited with one-and-a-half tackles for loss totaling fifteen negative yards and recorded a quarterback sack that resulted in a twelve-yard loss.
Grand Valley State is scheduled to host Davenport University on Saturday, October fourth in its annual Family Day contest as well as its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener at Lubbers Stadium. Kickoff is set for four p.m.
