The Grand Valley State University (GVSU) men's and women's swim and dive teams had a strong showing on the first day of the GVSU Invite, held at the Holland Aquatic Center in Allendale, Michigan. The event marked the season opener for both teams.
On the men's side, GVSU secured victories over McKendree and Hope with scores of 420.5-153 and 420.5-237.5, respectively. Raul Briceno won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:29.85, while Mason Crews finished second in his debut. In the 50-yard freestyle, Evan Scotto DiVetta placed first at 19.75 seconds, followed by several teammates in top positions.
Jan Matejczuk took second place in the 200 individual medley, and Matti Gaebler finished third. The men's 200 freestyle relay team—composed of Ali Usama, Mahmoud Abdelkarim, Matejczuk, and Scotto DiVetta—finished first with a time of 1:19.80. GVSU also claimed first place in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:15.02; three other relay teams from GVSU followed closely behind.
In diving events, Carter Wood led with a score of 291.38 on the 1-meter board, Max Schwickert was second, and Austin Clise third.
For the women’s team, GVSU led against both McKendree (451-115.5) and Hope (451-252.5). Lucy Hedley won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.06 seconds; Avery Rottier came second. Katie O'Connell secured first place in the 500-yard freestyle with Linda Frick following in second.
Sara Alvarez won the women’s 200 individual medley at 2:05.67; Vittoria Proietti was third as five Lakers finished among the top eight swimmers.
The women’s relay team consisting of Hedley, Rottier, Samara Zeinert, and Ana Villamil set a new school record in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:32.91.
Proietti teamed up with Alvarez, Kelly Shortall, and Hedley to win the women’s 400 medley relay at a time of 3:47.76.
In diving events for women, Olivia Kutsche scored highest on the one-meter board at 240.23 points; Samantha Plough was close behind in second place.
Competition will continue Saturday at Holland Aquatic Center with sessions scheduled for late morning and afternoon.
