The Grand Valley State University men's golf team completed the first day of play at the Copperhead Championship in Palm Harbor, Florida. The tournament features 15 teams, all of which are ranked or have received votes in the most recent Golf Coaches Association of America poll.
After two rounds on Monday, host team West Florida leads with a score of nine under par. Lee University is in second place at five under. Grand Valley State and Wingate are tied for third at two over par. Nova Southeastern is fifth with a score of six over.
For Grand Valley State, Andrew Gwilliams ended the day tied for second individually after shooting rounds of 70 and 69, totaling three under par and making eight birdies. Bryce Wheeler finished tied for seventh at one under, with scores of 73 and 68, making five birdies and an eagle. Charlie Cooley and Manuel Cue Vargas are both tied for 33rd place at four over par; Cooley recorded rounds of 72 and 74 with four birdies, while Cue Vargas had rounds of 74 and 72 with eight birdies. Maverick Conaway is tied for 46th after posting a 72 and a 76 for a total of six over par with four birdies.
The Lakers will complete the final round of the championship on Tuesday.
