GVSU swimming & diving teams sweep Calvin University and Saginaw Valley State

Grand Valley State University’s swimming and diving teams won against Calvin University and Saginaw Valley State in a tri-meet held Friday evening in Allendale, Michigan.

In the women’s events, GVSU beat Calvin 249-51 and Saginaw Valley State 241-58. The Lakers’ 200 medley relay team of Proietti, Villamil, Rottier, and Hedley finished first with a time of 1:44.05. Carly Damon and Gaia Tomaselli placed third and fourth in the 1,000 freestyle.

Senior Katie O'Connell secured first place in the 200 freestyle at 1:51.83. Linda Frick came in third at 1:53.93. Vittoria Proietti took first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.40, followed by Alice Persson in second.

Liv Geiger led the 100 breaststroke at 1:03.62, while Sara Alvarez was second at 1:03.87. Shortall won the 200 butterfly (2:06.91), with Tomaselli finishing second and Heidi Schneider and Yunona Freese taking third and fourth.

Lucy Hedley won the 50 freestyle (23.92). Angelica Angilletta finished second in the 100 freestyle (52.78). Persson claimed first place in the 200 backstroke (2:01.96) as Nation took third (2:04.52).

McAlpine captured her second win of the meet by winning the 200 breaststroke (2:16.49), with Alvarez coming in second (2:21.18) and Maya Reifinger placing third.

Proietti added another victory with a first-place finish in the 500 freestyle (4:57.73). Hedley and Frick placed third and fourth respectively.

Shortall also picked up a win in the 100 butterfly (57.69), while freshmen Alex Evans and Alivia Weaver were third and fourth.

O'Connell earned another win by taking first place in the 200 individual medley (2:05.22). Staci Nation finished second at that event.

In diving events, Emi Goto won on the one-meter board scoring 250.95 points; Olivia Kutsche, Macy Polasek, and Bradleigh Palmer completed positions two through four.

Kutsche took first place on three-meter dive with a score of 256.45; Goto was runner-up with a score of 244.75.

The Lakers’ team of Samara Zeinert, Angelica Angilletta, Vittoria Proietti, and Madeline Basa finished first in the women’s 400 freestyle relay clocking a time of 3:28.95.

On the men’s side, GVSU outscored Calvin by a margin of 250-48 and Saginaw Valley State by 233-66. The men's relay team—Jan Matejczuk, Andrew Goh, Thomas Ferguson, Evan Scotto DiVetta—took top honors for their event at a time of 1:27.91.

Freshman Berk Boz was victorious in the men’s 1,000 freestyle. Matti Gaebler posted his own win for GVSU by leading all swimmers home in the 200 freestyle.

Goh was fastest to finish both breaststroke events; Luis Ojeda Bosch led his field for men’s butterfly; Scotto DiVetta took wins for both sprint freestyles—50 yards (19.98 seconds)—and longer sprints as well as contributing to relay victories throughout competition.

Carter Wood topped both diving events for men; Gryffin Porter finished third on one meter while Austin Clise was runner-up on three meters.

The Lakers concluded their performance with another relay win from Ferguson, Mahmoud Abdelkarim, Christoffel, Scotto DiVetta who closed out competition atop standings for their event (2:56.14).

Grand Valley State is scheduled to compete again Saturday October 25 when it hosts Northern Michigan at its campus pool beginning at 1 p.m.
