GVSU leads GLIAC Championships after first day

The GVSU men's golf team has taken the lead after the first day of the GLIAC Championships in Augusta, Michigan. The Lakers finished their opening round with a score of 282 (-2), placing them eight strokes ahead of Ferris State, which is in second place at +6. Parkside follows in third with a score of +13.

Wayne State holds fourth position with a score of +16, while SVSU rounds out the top five teams at +17 after shooting a round of 301.

All five golfers from GVSU are positioned within the top ten individual standings. Nick Krueger leads individually after shooting a round of 69 (-2) with three birdies, giving him a one-stroke advantage. Manuel Cue Vargas is in second place following his round of 70 (-1), also making three birdies. Drew Coble is tied for third place after recording four birdies and finishing even par at 71. Charlie Cooley's performance included three birdies, resulting in a tie for fifth with a score of 72 (+1). Bryce Wheeler sits tied for ninth after scoring two birdies and completing his round at 73 (+2).

The competition continues tomorrow morning with the second round of stroke play. The top four teams will proceed to the matchplay semifinals scheduled for the afternoon.
