GVSU men's golf team advances to GLIAC Championship final

The Grand Valley State University (GVSU) men's golf team is set to compete in the GLIAC Championship final after a strong performance in Augusta, Michigan. The Lakers secured their spot by defeating Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU) 3-1-1 in the semifinals.

In the stroke play portion of the tournament, GVSU led with a second-round score of 275 (-9), finishing at -11 overall. This placed them 26 strokes ahead of Wayne State, who finished second. Ferris State and SVSU followed in third and fourth place, respectively. All four teams advanced to the matchplay semifinals.

Bryce Wheeler emerged as the GLIAC Individual medalist after an impressive round of 65 (-6), featuring six birdies, to finish at -4. Drew Coble and Manuel Cue Vargas tied for second place; Coble scored a 69 (-2) with four birdies, while Vargas shot a 70 (-1), also achieving four birdies. Nick Krueger finished fourth with a round of 72 (+1) and three birdies. Charlie Cooley rounded out the top five with an even-par round of 71.

During the semifinals against SVSU, GVSU maintained their momentum. Krueger won his match by seven strokes with a score of 70, Wheeler won by two strokes also shooting a 70, and Coble had the lowest round at 67 to win by three strokes. Cooley tied his match with both players scoring a 73, while Vargas narrowly lost his match despite carding a 71.

The Lakers will face Ferris State in tomorrow's GLIAC Championship final, where one round of matchplay will determine the conference winner.
