Grand Valley State University (GVSU) secured a victory in the final game of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) series against Wayne State, with an 8-2 win. This triumph allowed GVSU to claim both the season series, finishing 4-2, and the weekend series at 3-1. The Lakers now hold second place in the GLIAC standings with a 13-7 record and an overall standing of 21-18. Their next match is scheduled against Davenport on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
The Lakers initiated their scoring drive in the third inning when Jake Rydquist singled, followed by Ayden VanEnkevort reaching base due to an error. Ryan Dykstra executed a sacrifice bunt, paving the way for Connor Schuman's two-RBI single to center field. Schuman then advanced to second through a steal, reached third via Jonas Gulbrandsen's infield single, and scored from Brendan Guciardo's RBI double.
Rydquist further extended GVSU's lead with a solo home run in the fourth inning. In the seventh inning, after Dykstra walked and Schuman singled, Gulbrandsen delivered another RBI single that brought Dykstra home.
In the eighth inning, designated hitter Connor McCormack hit a single followed by Rydquist's RBI double that scored McCormack. Dykstra later added another run with a single that scored Rydquist.
The ninth inning saw Guciardo reach base due to catcher's interference, followed by walks from Anderson and Rydquist that loaded the bases. VanEnkevort capitalized on an error to score Guciardo.
Pitcher Mike Riley earned his third win of the season with solid performance on the mound, allowing two runs over seven hits while striking out four batters. Will Goebel completed the game with two innings pitched and two strikeouts.
