The GVSU women's lacrosse team concluded their nonconference schedule with a decisive 11-3 victory over Walsh. The Laker defense was a key factor in the win, limiting Walsh to only six shots in the first half and securing an overall strong defensive performance.
Sydney Stone initiated the scoring five and a half minutes into the game, followed by two consecutive goals from Maddy Champagne, giving GVSU a 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Walsh managed to score early in the second quarter, but Champagne responded with her third goal, extending GVSU's lead. Stone added another goal before halftime, with GVSU leading 5-1.
In the third quarter, Stone completed her hat trick with an assist from Jillian Bingman. Delaney Smith and Ella Boose also contributed goals, with Boose's goal assisted by Ashleigh Rothe. Walsh scored late in the quarter but still trailed 8-2 going into the final period.
GVSU continued their offensive momentum in the fourth quarter as Champagne scored twice more around a goal from Rothe. Walsh scored once more before the game's conclusion.
Champagne led GVSU with five goals while Stone achieved a hat trick. Additional contributions came from Smith, Boose, and Rothe each scoring one goal. Assists were recorded by Rothe and Bingman.
Kaylyn Cater excelled as goalkeeper for GVSU, making six saves to bolster their defense. The Lakers caused 15 turnovers and collected 19 groundballs throughout the match. Notably, Rothe and Alkire each caused four turnovers; Champagne and Lauren Volk caused two each. Alkire also reached a career milestone by picking up her 100th groundball.
Looking ahead, GVSU will resume GLIAC play on Sunday when they travel to face Davenport at noon.
